A Destination Wedding in the Kerala Backwater

Planning a destination wedding in Kerala might seem like a huge task when you live on the other side of the world, but when you are finally there with your best friends and closest family it is worth the world. Nisha and Neil had a destination wedding in the backwaters of Kerala at the incredible Kumarakom lake resort, and it was a wedding to remember. I was sitting on the luxurious house boat on the way from Alappuzha (Alleppey), also known as “Venice of the East” because of its surrounding waterways and canals, to Kumarakom on the picturesque Vembanad Lake, and thought to myself that being a destination wedding photographer can definitely bring you places. The Kerala backwater is a paradise on Earth, and Kumarakom, consisting of a cluster of islands which have been converted into a number of tourist resorts, is one of those places that you simply do not want to leave.

Kerala is one of my favorite places on earth. I love the food, the palm trees, and the backwater was simply the best backdrop I could have asked for. Imagine a wedding feast in God’s own country, sailing in a house boat to the destination, a decorated elephant for the groom’s procession and a performance of traditional Kerala musicians and drummers, not to mention a beautiful couple as models, what else can you ask for?

The wedding itself took place in the morning, and in the afternoon when the guests were preparing to leave and were boarding their house boats on the way back to Alleppy, Nisha, Neil and I took some time alone and walked around the resort to take a few post-wedding pictures. I actually wanted to get them both into the infinity pool wearing their wedding attire but Nisha managed to convince me that the sari would weigh so much and that it might be difficult to get her out of the water. We laughed about it, and ended the day sitting on the edge of the pool and watching the house boats sail away into the sunset. Nisha and Neil, your wedding was absolutely great fun.

  • Sephi Bergerson

Thank you Phyllis. Yes, these are new presets I’ve just created. I needed a new look to my work and I’m happy that the wedding industry allows so much room for creativity in manipulating images in comparison with the documentary world. cheers
